Pre-intervention study report on awareness campaign for Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling HTMS (Sindh)
A pre-intervention survey was conducted in multiple Districts of Sindh Province which are Karachi, Larkana, Jacobabad, Dadu and Ghotki in order to assess the knowledge base of people regarding HTMS. The awareness campaign regarding Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling (HTMS) was planned to be implemented by UNODC in partnership with Federal Intelligence Agency (FIA) while the study was conducted by the research team of CHRS.
The main purpose of conducting the pre-intervention survey was to identify the existing level of awareness on HTMS in five districts of Sindh province to analyze the perception and awareness of various stakeholders regarding detrimental effects of HTMS on individuals, families and the society at large. The survey assessed the knowledge of targeted audience regarding HTMs, the difference between human trafficking and migrant smuggling, the actors involved in HTMS, the victims of HTMS, the laws and helpline available for the victims of HTMs and the medium of conducting successful awareness campaign. UNODC launched the awareness campaign in a number of HTMS hotspots in Pakistan using digital and print media as well as text messages. After the intervention, a post intervention survey was also conducted by CHRS on behalf of UNODC which showed the learning of the participants and the outcomes.
The study revealed the existing of awareness among community members regarding HTMS and its societal implications at large and detrimental effect on individuals. Very few members were aware of terminologies that relates to human trafficking, migrant smuggling, types of human trafficking, legal and regulatory framework to curb HTMS in Pakistan.
